According to survey, supermarkets shun cheap imports for British pork

As Tesco reports its largest loss in its 96 year history (£6.38 billion), the latest Porkwatch survey reveals the supermarket has maintained its proportion of British pork versus imported supplies.

Despite cheaper imported supplies being available, the supermarket has maintained British pork at 66% and British sausages at 80%. It has increased its British bacon from 44% to 45%, but is down from 58% to 57% on British ham.

The survey has shown that overall retailers have increased the proportion of British bacon versus imported on their shelves from 44% to 46%, and have maintained British sausages at 83%, British fresh pork at 83%, and British ham at 64%. Results showed that the only disappointing performer is ASDA which has shown a fall in every category.

“This is a remarkable testament to the quality of the domestic product at a time when the gap between British farm-gate prices and the average European Union price is 26p a kilo, and the differential with Danish pork is over 35p a kilo,” said National Pig Association chairman Richard Lister.
