Aubrey Allen celebrated the end of National Apprenticeship Week with a trip to 10 Downing Street in a bid to bridge the skills gap across the meat industry by transforming the apprenticeship training system for butchers in the UK.

The Coventry-based butcher joined forces with a number of other leading employers in the UK and has been tasked to develop a new training standard for apprentices entering the butchery industry.

The event followed the Prime Minister’s announcement of the second phase of trailblazers groups earlier in the week, which included 29 new groups covering areas for apprentices such as health, law, media, hospitality and tourism, involving more than 340 employers.

Lucianne Allen represented Aubrey Allen at No. 10 for talks with Chancellor George Osborne, who stepped in to host the event on behalf of David Cameron, who was called away to Brussels for an EU emergency summit for discussions on Russia and Ukraine.

Commenting Lucianne Allen said:  “The visit to Downing Street marks a very exciting lifetime experience that reflects the progress that Aubrey Allen has made in developing its own apprenticeship programme over the last year.  As a family business we are hugely proud to be using our knowledge and experience to set new training standards for the industry as a whole.

“The opportunity to work with other leading UK employers within the food and drink industry represents a unique experience and will inevitably provide a fresh thinking approach towards training apprentices in the meat industry.

“Apprenticeships are a great way to ensure our sector has a skilled workforce for the future and is the best way to train and develop tomorrow’s young talent, whilst inspiring loyalty and driving ambition in their chosen careers”, she explained.

Welcoming everyone to Downing Street the Chancellor remarked that No. 10 has been a place of great ambition in history, but he didn’t think there had ever been such an ambitious group of people gathered as there were with the apprentices and employers on this occasion.

The new standard for Butchery will build on the work of the Phase 1 Trailblazer in food and drink manufacturing.  Other organisations joining Aubrey Allen include ABP, Bernard Matthews, Canswick PLC, Cranstons Quality Butchers Ltd, Faccenda, Fairfax Meadow, J. W Mettrick, John Taylor, Morrisons, Two Sisters and Walter Smith Fine Foods. This latest accolade for Aubrey Allen follows within a week of being awarded the Institute of Meat and Meat Training Council’s Best Company Training Scheme Award.
