EBLEX cooking app targets under 25s

Encouraging young people to get cooking with beef and lamb is the idea behind a new app launched by EBLEX this month.

It’s designed to help people master five basic meals by the age of 25. SoundBites uses audio to help users memorise any of the 25 recipes while on the move. The audio also plays in short steps, so it doubles as a cook-along guide. With a voiceover from Dave Lamb, who famously narrates the C4 programme Come Dine With Me, the app is a modern alternative to the traditional cookbook.

Presented by 5by25, a campaign launched by Red Tractor beef and lamb in association with charities and youth groups, the free app aims to give novices the skills and confidence to get in the kitchen. Users can choose the dish they want to learn by searching for a main ingredient or cooking time. A serving selector changes the ingredient quantities according to the number of servings required and there are even suggestions for substituting ingredients, along with lots of recipe hints and tips to help users master the dish.

Once the meal’s been created, users can add reminder notes, rate the dish and share photos of the results via Facebook, Twitter and email.

The app, which was developed through a design competition run by Red Tractor beef and lamb for students at Goldsmiths College, University of London, was launched as a new resource for the 5by25 campaign, which aims to encourage young people to develop the useful cookery skills to help them live independent lives. The campaign was launched following research which revealed that almost 60% of Britain’s 16-25 year-olds are leaving home without the ability to cook even a simple Spaghetti Bolognese.

The app recipes are also available on the 5by25 website (www.5by25.com) along with guidance on selecting food buying, preparation and time management.
