EU commissioner plans focus on beef sector

Focus on the beef sector will be a priority in the next three years in order to highlight the role of the meat industry in the sustainability agenda, Phil Hogan, the European commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed.

Speaking at the recent EU Livestock and Meat Sector annual meeting held in Brussels, Hogan commented: “We will be making a bigger emphasis on the beef and meat sectors in 2017, 2018 and 2019 in order to highlight the role of the meat sector in the sustainability agenda.”

Hogan also reiterated his support for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), so long as it provides a good deal for EU farmers and EU businesses.

The European commissioner also highlighted the work being done by the EU Commission in order to open doors for EU companies to access third countries’ markets.

UECBV president, Philippe Borremanns, said that EU exports to third countries was the future of the sector, but a balance with imports remains necessary.
