Fred will be remembered for his significant contribution to training and education in the industry.

Most of that was at Smithfield College of Food Technology from 1962-1985 where he trained and worked with some of the leading captains of the meat industry.

His knowledge was put to great use and those who benefitted included The Institute of Meat, The Royal Smithfield Club and The Worshipful Company of Butchers where he was Master in 1992/1993.

Chief executive of the Institute, Keith Fisher, paid tribute to him: “He is a great loss to the trade. It was a privilege to know him. As well as his contribution to the Institute over many years he was influential in so many areas of meat trade life. He was involved in many young butcher competitions in the UK and across Europe.”

Fred was awarded an MBE for his services in 1983.
