Hong Kong has a taste for pork pies

According to BPEX, Melton Mowbray pork pies were a surprising hit with the Chinese at the Restaurant & Bar show in Hong Kong, who, despite being baffled at first – as they’re used to hot pies – loved the porky spicy taste and crust.

BPEX and EBLEX attended the show and presented the pork pies along with sausages, bacon and other pork products.

Considerable technical development has taken place to ensure that the frozen pork pie product provides a great eating experience when thawed. Distributors see high sales potential for the branded pork product, made with 100% Red Tractor pork.

BPEX export manager JP Garnier says: “Our push on the Hong Kong market with added-value pork products has been successful, with some high-class supermarkets now presenting a British meat section with sausages and bacon. Premium pork is now on the menu of some of the best restaurants in Hong Kong and the number of brands and importers is also rising.

“Hong Kong is a large market on its own with a population of eight million, a sophisticated food culture, high purchasing power and no indigenous pork production. It is also the gateway to the huge Chinese market.”
