Howie’s achievement is further illustration of women coming to the forefront in the UK meat industry, following the inaugural Meat Business Women forum in March, which brought together over 50 female delegates keen to develop female talent within the sector.

The Future Business competition attracted over 3,500 entries, of which over 100 undergraduates were shortlisted for one of the 12 awards on offer. This year’s award ceremony, now in its sixth year, was hosted by TV journalist and presenter Fiona Bruce.

Howie, who is studying Business Economics and Finance went through a series of online tests, application forms, interviews and assessment exercises, to emerge as the winner. Her prize includes a summer internship with category sponsor Mars, and a trip to one of Mars’s international offices in Dubai.

She said: “I am so pleased to have won the award of Future Business Leader 2015 at the Undergraduate of the Year Awards in London.

“The years of packing sausages with freezing hands in my father’s business is what made all the difference.”
