Maximising beef returns – free open day in Scotland

Quality Meat Scotland (QMS), in conjunction with Cairngorms National Park Authority, is offering cattle producers the opportunity to attend a free open day on Thursday 5th September at Alvie Estate, Kincraig.

The open day will highlight the importance of producing quality beef at minimum cost. Producers will be able to meet with other farmers, take a look at the overall supply chain and discuss areas that could help their business for the year ahead.

Kathy Peebles, QMS livestock development manager, said: “As costs continue to rise, producers should be looking to maximise what they can produce from home grown forage and should also be scrutinising their businesses to identify where money can potentially be saved.

“This open day is an opportunity for producers to stand back and take an objective look at their business, whether they produce store calves or finished stock.

“It will be an interactive day at Alvie Estate and everyone involved in beef production is encouraged to come along to this free event.”

Topics covered at the event will include how to calculate forage stocks and minimise the cost of bought in feed, general cost-saving areas and, meat quality and what the consumer is really looking for when buying beef. In the afternoon there will be a butchery demonstration based on market requirements and the cost implications of when animals do not adhere to mainstream specifications.

The open day starts at 10.30am and finishes at 3.30pm and there is no need to book a place. For further information, contact Bruce McConachie, 01479 870 550, BruceMcConachie@cairngorms.co.uk.
