Meat manufacturers honoured at animal welfare awards
A host of UK meat manufacturers were honoured by Compassion in World Farming at its recent Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards.
The awards celebrate the commitment of leading food businesses to improve animal welfare standards. Companies from across the globe were recognised at this year’s event, held in Berlin on 28th June and hosted by singer/songwriter Blanche Ellis.

Among the winners was frozen food seller Cook Trading which has 84 stores in the UK as well as concessions in over 400 retailers. The company was presented with the Good Pig Award for the use of higher welfare pork in all its dishes.
A Good Chicken award went to UK-based Ella’s Kitchen. Set up in 2006 by Ella’s dad, Paul Lindley, Ella’s Kitchen sells organic baby food with free range chicken used in all its recipes.
Capestone Organic Poultry Ltd in Pembrokeshire also scooped a Good Chicken Award. Its fully integrated organic free-range poultry farm produces and processes all its own poultry on site. The company is said to be one of the largest organic poultry producers in the UK.
Good Egg awards went to UK-based Gourmet Burger Kitchen (foodservice), Clarence Court (manufacturer), Five Guys (foodservice), Green King (foodservice), Mitchells & Butlers (foodservice) and Pret (foodservice).
The Best Marketing Award 2016 (in the foodservice or manufacturing sector) went to McDonald’s UK.
Jemima Jewell, head of food business at Compassion, commented: “There’s some hugely exciting work on farm animal welfare going on in both the foodservice and manufacturing sectors.
“Finding innovative solutions to welfare challenges, and engaging customers on the issue of farm animal welfare, are both crucial in driving industry-wide change. These awards recognise those who are leading the way.”
