More lamb cuts exported for Belgian consumers

The volume of lamb exported to Belgium is set to rise significantly after one of the country’s largest supermarket chains switched its sourcing away from the Southern hemisphere.

The retailer previously supplied all its stores with chilled lamb from New Zealand and Australia, representing 95% of volumes.

The change is good news for exports of UK lamb, which last year saw 95,000 tonnes go overseas.

Oliver Delrue, the EBLEX and Meat Promotion Wales (Hybu Cig Cymru) representative in Belgium, said: “We are delighted by this important news which comes after long discussions and trials.

“It means that all Belgian supermarkets groups now offer a great majority of freshly sourced lamb, and that the difference of quality is fully recognised.

“This also recognises the constant marketing effort with Belgian consumers. We are pleased to report that lamb consumption in Belgium continues to rise. In effect, in 2012, lamb was the only meat species whose consumption increased in Belgium.

“Of special interest to us, is the increase in the variety of cuts we now offer to the Belgian public and we believe that further progress is possible as lamb is increasingly viewed as a natural and healthy alternative to other meats.”

This new deal could mean up to 1,100 tonnes of additional exports on a yearly basis.
