Organic award winners

The winners of the Soil Association Organic Food Awards 2012 have been announced as part of this year’s Organic September, Europe’s biggest celebration of all things organic. The awards are now in their 24th year.

The pork category was won by Hophurst Farm for its Hophurst Farm Pork. Michael and Jayne Duveen stock their farm with native and rare breeds. To support their small, mixed farming enterprise they also started a butchery in London, which supports other farmers that produce to the same standards as themselves – Jacob’s Ladder Farms.

Brocklebys Organic Picnic Pork Pie and Riverford’s Organic Homity Pie were joint winners of the Pies, pizzas, pasties award.

The poultry accolade went to Back to the Garden for its Astley Estate Whole Chicken. The lamb category had joint winners, Macaroni Farm for its Leg of Lamb and Langley Chase Organic Farm for its Manx Loaghtan Mutton.

The beef winner was Higher Hacknell Farm for its South Devon Organic Beef.

Over three days at the Duke of Cambridge organic pub in London, an expert judging panel of food critics, restaurateurs, broadcasters and chefs, including Hardeep Singh Kohli and Jo Wood, sipped, nibbled and crunched their way through over 500 products across 34 categories, – from poultry, preserves and pies to cheese, chocolate and baby food.
