Butcher Peter Imison retires after six decades in the industry

Peter Imison, of Peter C. F Imison’s Butcher in Hull, will retire on 2nd April from a career in the meat industry spanning more than 60 years.

As he retires, Peter’s butchers’ shop – which he has owned and worked from since 1962 – will close, too. His grandson, Ben Taylor, who has been working in the shop as Peter’s partner along with Peter’s wife Pam, has chosen to take a different career direction, hence the closing of the premises.

Peter entered the family butchery business in 1953, and other than serving in the East Yorkshire Regiment for two years, has never left the meat sector. He told Meat Management that he has never once considered a different career path.

On his retirement, Peter said: “I’m looking forward to retiring, although it will be sad. I come from a family of farmers and butchers, so meat has been in the family a long time. It will be sad, too, to say goodbye to the shop.”

Peter’s history is a busy one; he’s undertaken many roles in varying areas of the meat industry, including that of President of the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders (NFMFT), and a Trustee of the Butchers’ & Drovers’ Charitable Institution (BDCI).

He has also been a president for a number of butchery associations, including the Hull & District Master Butchers’ Association; the North & East Riding Council of Butchers; and the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers’ Council.

Amongst other roles, Peter is currently the chairman for the Hull & District Master Butchers’ Association Benevolent Fund, and the Hon. Secretary for Hull & District Master Butchers’ Association. These are roles Peter will continue to be involved in following his retirement from the butcher’s shop.

Peter explained to Meat Management that he feels he’s had a very worthy and interesting career. He said that once he retires, he’ll be playing golf at least three times a week, and probably shopping twice a week if his wife has anything to do with it.
