DB Foods inspection prompts MuscleFood recalls

Food retailer MuscleFood has recalled more than 60 products, following an unannounced inspection by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) of its supplier DB Foods.

The recall follows FSA’s concerns about procedures at DB Foods for use-by dates on some products that were reportedly not compliant with legal requirements.

According to FSA and Food Standards Scotland, there is no evidence of wider problems across DB Foods’ sites and “no further action that would affect the business has been necessary”.

MuscleFood supplies meat products via its website directly to the public and the business is contacting all of its affected customers to make them aware of the recall.

People who have bought the products in question are advised not to eat them; MuscleFood will arrange a courier to pick the products up, and provide a full refund for the items.

FSA noted that it is continuing to investigate DB Foods’ procedures along with local authorities, adding that “further action will be taken if necessary”.

It added: “The recall of the affected products is a proportionate response to the issues found. We have no evidence of wider problems across DB Foods sites and no further action that would affect the business has been necessary.

“Distribution from its sites is continuing and is being overseen by FSA staff.”

MuscleFood has stressed that the recall has been voluntary, dismissing any media suggestions that it was “forced to recall products” as inaccurate.

In a statement, the company’s founder, Darren Beale, apologised to anyone affected by the recall, adding: “The team and I take our responsibilities incredibly seriously; and although on a daily basis we are offered products from a variety of suppliers we vet and choose our suppliers very carefully.

“In this case our supplier was a British Retail Consortium AA rated supplier; the highest rating you can achieve in the industry, with an excellent pedigree of supplying multinational companies. The moment they realised their mistake; they informed us and we informed you.”
