HCC awarded £1.5m funding for export development

Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths AM, announced that Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) is set to be awarded £1.5 million to focus on exports.

The announcement, made during the HCC reception at food tradeshow Anuga, in Cologne, noted that the funding has been awarded for the Enhanced Export Development Programme, over three years, which will commence in April 2018.

The funding is expected to provide a “major boost” to HCC’s efforts on behalf of the Welsh red meat industry to retain its European markets during the next three years, while growing new business outside the European Union.

Welcoming the news, HCC chief executive, Gwyn Howells, noted: “Despite the ambiguity of Brexit, we’re seeing growth in the overseas trade for Welsh red meat and the Enhanced Export Development Programme will drive this forward and help the sector prepare for the future.”

“HCC, in conjunction with our major processors and the Welsh Government, have been successful in growing trade in Europe. The success of Welsh red meat must be secured and not put at risk and this funding will be a key component in ensuring longevity of the sector in export markets.”
