KFC closes 750 stores after mass chicken shortage

Fast-food chain KFC has been forced to close 750 of its 900 UK outlets, following a mass chicken shortage due to “delivery problems”.

The company awarded its delivery contract to DHL last Tuesday (13th February), replacing food distribution firm Bidvest Logistics.

KFC attributed the shortages to its new delivery partner’s “teething problems” in a statement on Twitter, adding that some of its restaurants are closed and others are operating a limited menu, or shortened hours.

Restaurants in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are open as usual.

KFC set up a web page on which customers can find which restaurants are open, as of 9:00pm, 19.02.18.

Union GMB has accused the chain of making a “penny-pinching decision” that has caused 255 redundancies, while claiming that “hundreds of workers at closed KFC restaurants” are not getting paid.

Mick Rix, GMB national officer, commented: “We tried to warn KFC this decision would have consequences – well now the chickens are coming home to roost.

“Bidvest are specialists – a food distribution firm with years of experience. DHL are scratching around for any work they can get, and undercut them.”

He added: “KFC are left with hundreds of restaurants closed while DHL try and run the whole operation out of one distribution centre – where conditions are an utter shambles.

“Three weeks ago KFC knew they had made a terrible mistake, but by then it was too late.

“KFC’s bird-brained decision has caused untold misery to customers, to Bidvest workers and restaurant staff who are not being paid.”

Meat Management has contacted KFC and DHL for comment.
