Meat Management editor receives Freedom of The City

Meat Management editor Emily Ansell Elfer received the Freedom of the City of London on Friday 12th January.

Emily, who is also the editor of sister publication Food Management Today, was granted the honour ahead of being clothed as a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Butchers.

The ceremony took place at the Chamberlain’s Court within London’s Guildhall and was conducted by clerk to the Chamberlain, Craig Murray.

Emily was asked to read the ‘Declaration of a Freeman’ and to sign the Freeman’s Declaration Book before being presented with a parchment copy of the Freedom inscribed by a calligrapher, together with a copy of the Rules for the Conduct of Life which date from the mid-18th century.

Emily said: “I feel honoured to have received the Freedom of the City of London and am very proud to play a small part in continuing the traditions of the City. The event was a most enjoyable occasion and was particularly special as my grandfather, James Woods, who also has the Freedom, attended. I was pleased to continue the family tradition! I now look forward to joining the Worshipful Company of Butchers as a liveryman in February.

“As editor of what is now the only UK meat industry print publication, I am keen to fully immerse myself in the meat sector, its traditions and its values. By becoming a freeman of The City of London and a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of butchers, I am well placed to continue Meat Management’s support of the sector and further develop the many valued friendships I have formed with likeminded individuals.”
