NFU announces Welsh lamb supporting plan

NFU Cymru has announced an eight point action plan calling on all retailers to show their commitment to Welsh lamb, ahead of the NSA event in Talybont-on-Usk.

NFU Cymru has announced an eight point action plan to support Welsh lamb.

Through its manifesto, the union is aiming to provide a clear and transparent commitment to sourcing Welsh lamb, while ensuring that labelling the lamb’s origin and highlighting the PGI is clear.

In addition, the union pledges to ensure dedicated shelf space for both Welsh and UK lamb, to ensure that “consumers are left in no doubt what they are buying”, along with a commitment not to mix lamb products either on shelf or in the packet.

The eight point action plan also promises to ensure that there are adequate supplies of Welsh lamb over key religious festivals.

Elsewhere, NFU Cymru wants to actively engage with producers to “build stability and confidence between producer and retailer”, with the aim of delivering Welsh lamb to the consumer for “12 months of the year whilst ensuring an increasing proportion of produce matches the retailers’ desired specification”.

It also outlines a plan to develop new products to convince more consumers to buy Welsh lamb, along with a commitment to work with HCC, levy bodies and assurance bodies to market and promote Welsh and UK lamb, in store and via relevant media channels.

NFU Cymru Livestock chairman, Wyn Evans, said: “NFU Cymru will use every possible opportunity during our regular meetings with retailers over the coming weeks to press them to confirm their commitments to sourcing Welsh and to remind them of our eight point action plan.”
