Primary meat and poultry sees volume growth

Kantar Worldpanel’s latest figures on the Meat, Poultry and Fish market have revealed that beef and poultry have seen a prolonged volume growth, with chicken reaching double digits.

1.1 million more shoppers bought steak during the period of 12 weeks ending on 26th March 2017.

According to Kantar, Easter is a major contributing factor to the growth of meat, poultry and roasting meats overall, in the latest figures from 12 weeks ending on 26th March 2017.

The report highlights that 1.1 million more shoppers bought steak in that period, helping to drive a £14.8 million boost for sales.

According to the figures, the majority of this growth came from “empty nesters and retired households,” each spending on average £6 per trip on steaks.

Kantar business unit director Nathan Ward pointed out that there was a “continued impressive performance for chicken,” which was the reason of 9.7 million more trips during the period.

Ward added: “Legs, wings and breasts continue their impressive performance over the last few months, but despite red meat roasts suffering, whole birds add 5.8 million kilograms to the category and 3.6 million more trips.”

The report also highlights that Britain has seen “record temperatures in early April”, which could also mean “a few early BBQs”.
