Russia extends food import ban until December 2018

The Russian Government has announced it will extend its import ban on certain categories of food and agricultural products from countries including the European Union and the US among others from 1st January to 31st December 2018.

According to a statement published on the Russian Government website, the ban will affect imports from the European Union, the US, Canada, Australia, Norway, Ukraine, Albania, Montenegro, Iceland and Liechtenstein to “extend certain economic measures to ensure the security of the Russian Federation.”

The list of banned EU food products includes meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy products.

The move follows the EU’s decision last June to extend its sanctions against Russia for another six months, meaning they are now set to expire on 31st January 2018.

The statement read: “These restrictions are designed to expand the special economic countermeasures against certain states based on the extent of their involvement in the sanctions regime against Russia.”
