Surge in consumers buying Christmas dinner for pets

Twice as many pets will be given Christmas treats and presents by their owners this year compared to last, according to Tesco.

Demand for festive meat-based meals for dogs and cats such as pigs in blankets and three bird roasts is on course to double at the major supermarket compared to last Christmas.

The retailer’s most popular luxury Christmas dinner for dogs is set to be turkey, sage and cranberry whilst cats for cats it is simply turkey and sage.

Tesco pet food buyer Ashley Marks said: “Judging by the rocketing demand for posh pooch foodie treats like pigs in blankets, three bird roasts and even mince pies the saying ‘it’s a dog’s life’ can finally be laid to rest, at least for Christmas.

“And the phrase ‘dressed like a dog’s dinner’ could also soon be redundant with tens of thousands of lucky canines set to tuck into slap up festive feasts.

“Even cats are getting in on the act with more owners than ever before treating their moggies to specially made turkey and sage Christmas dinners.

“In the past dogs and cats may have been given a few leftovers off the Christmas dinner table if they were lucky but these days many are being treated like family members.”

Meanwhile, research by the RSPCA reveals nearly eight out of ten dog owners and 68% of cat owners have bought their pet a present.
