This year’s Excellence Award was presented to Dawn Meats CEO Niall Browne, recognising his innovative leadership and dedication to a sustainable meat processing industry.

In 2007, at the age of 34, Niall was appointed as chief executive of Dawn Meats. During his time at the helm of the company, Niall and his team have spearheaded the development of the Group; a significant milestone came in 2017 with the merger of Dawn Meats’ UK business with Dunbia, with full ownership following in 2020. More recently, the business has acquired 65% majority shareholding in New Zealand-based Alliance Group, adding to the company’s global position.
Niall is passionate about innovation and champions environmental sustainability and efficient processing, he has also developed diverse, first-class teams at Dawn Meats through the promotion of training, coaching and mentoring. Speaking to Meat Management, Niall shared more about his career and the values that have driven his success at Dawn Meats.

Early influences
After studying business studies at the University of Limerick, specialising in marketing and agribusiness, Niall joined Dawn Meats through its graduate management programme. He told us: “Although initially I was just helping out for a few weeks in the UK, one thing led to another and more than 30 years later, I’m still enjoying every day working with Dawn Meats. That early experience was invaluable because it gave me exposure to the business from the ground up, across production, procurement and marketing, and across sites in both Ireland and the UK.”
As Niall progressed through the business, he said that he was fortunate to work with many colleagues who were generous with their time, knowledge and experience. Talking about the people who have had a particular influence on his work Niall praised the founders of Dawn Meats, and said: “The three founders of the business definitely led by example, with their common sense and do-as-you-say approach to customer service. That is definitely embedded in our culture and an ethos that has served us well over the years.
“The advice that has stayed with me is to keep things simple, stay close to the customer and never lose sight of the fundamentals.
“In our business, success comes from doing the basics well every day: supporting our farmers, producing consistent quality food, serving customers reliably and investing in people for the long term.”
A sense of purpose
When asked what inspires his passion for the industry, Niall had a very simple response: “The sector matters.” He continued: “It supports farming families, rural employment, regional economies and food security, while providing high-quality, naturally nutritious protein to customers around the world. For me, that sense of purpose is a powerful motivator.
“I am also inspired by the resilience and ambition of the people within the sector. From farmers and site teams to HR specialists, commercial colleagues and sustainability teams, there is a shared determination for continuous improvement. The future of red meat depends on producing food responsibly, efficiently and sustainably, and that challenge brings out the best in people.”
Niall has guided the business with a focus on the importance of environmental sustainability, so we asked him what recent projects exemplified that ethos within Dawn Meats.
He told us: “Sustainability has always been built into how the business operates. Through Plan Four Zero, the Group has committed more than €100 million to its sustainability strategy, including the goal of reaching operational net zero by 2050.
“Recent progress has been significant. The Group has achieved a 77% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2018 to 2025, sources 100% renewable electricity for its sites, and has been a zero waste to landfill business since 2016. The business has also saved enough water since 2016 to fill more than 1,344 Olympic-size swimming pools and has continued to reduce packaging and plastic use across its operations.
“The installation of three acres of solar panels at the company’s headquarters in Co Waterford is another important step, with an additional five acres of solar installations at two more plants having just been rolled out and with further site installations in Ireland, the UK and New Zealand being planned.
“On farm, initiatives such as Activate Ireland and Activate UK are helping suppliers measure, manage and reduce emissions while also supporting biodiversity, water management and long-term farm resilience.
“For the red meat sector, the challenge is to keep producing high-quality food while continuously improving environmental performance. The progress made to date shows what can be achieved through investment, measurement, collaboration and a clear long-term plan.”

Strategic growth
A strategic thinker with an entrepreneurial approach, Niall has been behind significant growth of Dawn Meats. We asked him what had driven the expansion of the business. Niall explained: “Since becoming Chief Executive in 2007, the focus has been on building a stronger, more resilient international business while staying true to the values that made Dawn Meats successful in the first place. Growth has never been pursued for its own sake. It has been driven by strategic fit, customer need, access to high-quality supply and the ability to create long-term value.
“The partnership with Dunbia, followed by full ownership, strengthened the Group’s footprint across Ireland and the UK. The Alliance Group partnership extends that logic further, creating a year-round grass-fed red meat offering across the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and opening new opportunities for customers and farmer-suppliers in Ireland, the UK and New Zealand, leading to the group now having revenues of more than £4 billion.
“Culturally, successful integration depends on respect. Every business has its own heritage, strengths and people. The task is to identify the best of each organisation, build trust quickly and align around a clear purpose. Dawn Meats has always had a practical, can-do culture, and that has helped the Group integrate new businesses while maintaining momentum and performance, and, of course, the learnings and know-how flow both ways to the new business and back to the rest of the sites.”
Niall has seen a great deal of success during the course of his career and said there have been many proud moments along the way, but he sees the greatest highlights as those that reflect a collective achievement. He told us: “Being appointed by the board as chief executive at 34 was a significant milestone, but the real satisfaction comes from seeing the business grow, evolve and compete successfully on an international stage, and, of course, that success is the result of our team effort.”
Championing the next generation
For the future, Niall is determined to champion the next generation of leaders at Dawn Meats through initiatives such as its Management Development Programme, now in its seventh year. As an alumni of the company’s graduate management programme, he can vouch for the positive impact of a work culture that supports training and progression within the business.
“Developing people has always been central to the culture of Dawn Meats,” he told us. “I started through the graduate management programme myself, as did the entire executive team, so I understand first-hand the importance of giving the right people exposure, responsibility, support and the opportunity to progress.
“The Management Development Programme is also an important part of that commitment. It combines academic learning with practical business projects, coaching, teamwork and leadership development. Participants are encouraged to tackle real challenges facing the business and the wider agri-food sector, with topics covering sustainability and safety to operational efficiency and innovation.
“The programme helps identify and develop the next generation of leaders across the business. It also reinforces a key cultural belief: that talent exists throughout the organisation, and when people are supported properly, they can make a meaningful contribution to the future of the Group.”
Through his generosity and support towards future generations in the meat industry, as an advocate for sustainable practices and in his success as a business leader, spearheading growth at Dawn Meats, Niall Browne is an inspirational figure within the industry and a worthy winner of this year’s Excellence Award.
“Winning the 2026 Meat Management Excellence Award is a tremendous honour and a moment of real pride shared by everyone across our business. This achievement celebrates the passion, dedication and excellence our teams bring every day.”
