Edward had trained hard for the event, his first full marathon, though he has done the Great North Run on numerous occasions and has also completed several10k runs.

He said he was delighted with his finishing time and is expecting to raise £4,000 for Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa, Wetherby.

Martin House cares for children and young people with progressive life-limiting illnesses and provides support to their families. The hospice is close to the hearts of the Garthwaite family, as Edward’s niece Emma died there on Christmas Eve, 2012.

She was the daughter of his sister Mary and her husband Matthew, who with Edward and Mary’s father John, run the nearby family farm, which produces beef and pork exclusively for Blacker Hall Farm Shop in Wakefield.

Edward thanked all who had so far supported the cause. He said: “Martin House Children’s Hospice is an amazing place where they look after very poorly children. It means a great deal to me and my family after they cared for my niece so well during her short life in December 2012.”

The Calder Grove shop, with support from its customers, has already netted over £3,000 through other fund-raising events staged in aid of Martin House Children’s Hospice.
