Voting at a recent meeting of the Council of the European Union looks set to result in the approval of lactic acid as a decontaminant for beef and veal carcases. The regulation is expected to come into force from February 2013.

In the past this has meant beef carcases from the USA have not been permitted access to the EU. The European Food Safety authority (EFSA) and the United States of Agriculture are agreed that lactic acid use does not represent a safety concern.
