Tim Smith has been appointed as the new group technical director of Tesco, following his departure from the Food Standards Agency.

Reports indicate that he will be initially looking at the issues of quality and freshness in the supply base across the group. During his time at the FSA Smith frequently clashed with the industry. His brief forray into the regulatory world, joining the FSA in 2008 will not be lamented by the meat industry and arguably Smith's return is more in line with his past experience as a food manufacturer - he was previously with Arla Foods and Sara Lee.
