An outbreak of the avian influenza virus H5N1 has hit a farm in the Netherlands affecting 40,327 birds.

The outbreak was reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) at the end of last month, following the results of a PCR (polymerease chain reaction) test. All the affected birds have now been destroyed and a one kilometre protection zone has been established around the premises.

At the time of the report to the OIE the source of the outbreak or origin of the infection was unknown.
