The Danish Meat Research Institute (DMRI) has been awarded the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) 2015 award for significant advances in humane slaughter.

The award recognises individuals or organisations that have made significant scientific, technical or other advances that have led to improvements in the humane slaughter of livestock.

DMRI has had a major input in improving the welfare of pigs during transport and at slaughter, and has been influential in encouraging transport from farm to slaughter in natural social groups to improve welfare.

The Institute has also provided advice on making animal transport systems more humane and has set up systems for traceability and documentation of animal welfare used by the meat industry both as a control and to improve handling procedures and technical performance with the aim of improving animal welfare.
