New pig industry scholarship

A new Pig Industry Scholarship at Harper Adams University is aiming to help raise the profile of the exciting range of career opportunities in the pig industry, covering the allied industries as well as pig production.

The scholarship, which will be facilitated by BPEX and Harper Adams, is a practical step to help secure potential new entrants to the pig industry. It will offer a scholarship and an industrial placement year, funded by pig industry companies.

This model has been adopted successfully in other sectors and the National Pig Association’s (NPA) Allied Industry Group believes it will help significantly in recruitment of highly-qualified and committed young entrants.

The programme will be open to second-year degree students at Harper Adams. Companies who join the programme will provide a second year scholarship of £3,500 and a minimum 12-month paid industrial placement. They will then also have the option to award a final year scholarship of £3,500.

NPA Allied Industry Group chairman Peter Rollings said: “The Scholarship programme is a way to help pig industry companies recruit high-calibre new employees. It will demonstrate to students the wide range of exciting opportunities offered by the pig industry and help establish a relationship with a student early, in year two of their studies. The placement year element can also be viewed as a valuable ‘year-long interview’ opportunity.”

BPEX will be working with the Harper Adams student placement team to put interested companies in contact with students.

The first step for interested companies is to register their interest with BPEX by the end of June 2013 then, in October 2013, there will be a student placement fair to highlight the companies and scholarships on offer and the selection process will follow.
