Following a major review of its pork quality standards, the BMPA has launched its updated Pork Scheme.
Over several months, the BMPA carried out an evaluation of its standards to ensure that it meets the changing needs of consumers, retailers and manufacturers. The scheme will also require participants to enhance their scope to cover external cold stores, improve their audit arrangements and demonstrate an understanding of their supply chains.
Furthermore, the new measure stipulates the use of CCTV in all areas bearing on animal welfare, and requisite facilities for washing and disinfecting hauliers’ vehicles.
The director of BMPA, Stephen Rossides, said: “The review of the BMPA standards was the most comprehensive and thorough we have ever carried out, and brings the standards up to date to reflect the expectations of customers, retailers and scheme participants alike. Product quality is integral to the BMPA Pork Scheme and remains a cornerstone.”
Rossides also commented that the review: “Responds to recommendations in the Elliott Review into the Integrity and Assurance of Food Supply Networks.”
