“I have been a member of the guild for many years,” said Jason, “but never did I expect to be honoured and made Master”.
According to the history of The York Butchers’ Gild, it’s members have previously “held sway in matters of hygiene, weights and measures, meat restricted days and fast periods, and over ‘foreign’ [that is, non-gild] butchers.”
It is also believed that they performed a civic duty, namely, to act as the city executioner.
“Members of the guild and the citizens of York will be pleased to know that I have no intention of executing anything other than my duties as Master and to administer the Charitable Trust within the City of York and the historic county of Yorkshire,” Jason joked.
