Past president and life honorary vice president of the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders (NFMFT), Michael Beaumont, sadly passed away on 22nd October.
Born in 1944 in Colne, Huntingdonshire, Michael began training as a butcher when he was 20 years old.
Local butcher, Richard Whitmore, helped him open his shop in Fulbourne and in 2016 Michael celebrated 50 years in business.
Because of his earlier agricultural background, Michael started his own beef herd in order to produce his own beef for the shop – one of his moves to combat the threat from a new Tesco store, located one and a half miles away.
Michael remained committed to supplying only best quality locally produced meat, and was often a spokesman on local radio encouraging locally produced food.
He was president of the Cambridge and District Master Butchers Association for three years, including its centenary year, and joined the executive council of NFMFT in May 2000.
In 2002, he became a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Butchers, and, in 2005, and again in 2012, he took up the office of president of NFMFT.
Roger Kelsey, CEO of NFMFT, commented: “Michael was a great ambassador, not only for the NFMFT but also for the industry as a whole. He will be greatly missed.”
Michael leaves behind his wife Paula, daughter Angela, son James and granddaughters Jade and Olivia.
