The Q Guild of Butchers has announced the winners of its annual BBQ competition, in a ceremony that was held at Eastwood Hall, Nottinghamshire.
With the BBQ season about to launch, the contest aims to find the UK’s best butcher products for BBQ across a number of categories, including traditional pork sausage, speciality sausage, traditional burger, speciality burger, sirloin steak and speciality BBQ product.
H. Clewlow Butchers from Nantwich, Cheshire, was declared Supreme Champion, winning the Speciality BBQ Product category with its Nutty Lamb Noisette – a boneless loin of lamb, stuffed with pine nuts and minced lamb with a Greek-style marinade.
In other categories, Chase Farm Shop, Sutton Coldfield, won the Pork Sausages category, Fraser Butchers, Bolton, won the Beef Burger class and House of Bruar, Pitlochry, collected the Sirloin Steak category’s award.
In the speciality categories, apart from H. Clewlow, Allan Bennet from Wolverhampton scooped the Speciality Sausage award with the Sunshine sausage, JW Mettrick & Son Ltd, Glossop, Derbyshire, won the Speciality Burger with the High Peak Lamb Burger.
Judges who oversaw the Supreme Champion’s Speciality BBQ Product commented: “This really was the very best product of the day and truly deserved both accolades.
“The judges were particularly impressed with the way that they had used a variety of cuts, everything was there for a reason from the trimmings that imparted additional flavour to the fat that was left on to hold it all in place.”
Winning butcher, Charles Clewlow, said: ““We couldn’t be more thrilled to win both categories, in fact it is the second time in three years that we have taken the overall supreme champion crown, so we must be doing something right - our customers certainly think so as our Nutty Lamb Noisette is very popular.”
