General manager of Raps UK Ian Mackway is taking on a charity challenge in order to raise money for the Air Ambulance.

Mackway is hoping to raise money by driving 950 miles from the UK to Monte Carlo in a car that cost under £300.

The event involves 80 ‘old bangers’ driving the 950 miles over four days, and Mackway and his friend Kim Golding will be part of a team of eight cars.

The drive will take place from 2nd to 5th June, and all vehicle and transport expenses are funded by each team. Along the journey, the teams will have to complete a set of challenges.

At the end of the journey, each car is crushed and sold for scrap metal. The proceeds from the scrap metal, as well any donations raised, go to the charity of each team’s choice.

Mackway and his team have chosen the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance as their charity of choice.

Mackway, who is also a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Butchers and past festival chairman of the Butchers’ and Drovers’ Charitable Association (BDCI), explained: “We have chosen the Air Ambulance as they saved the life of a great friend, our much loved landlady, after a serious road accident last year.

“Every mission flown by the Air Ambulance costs £1,700 and they wouldn’t be there when we need them without charitable support.”

He went on to ask people to dig deep for the charity, saying: “Donations are the only income that this national charity has. Not one of these cars is worth more than a bag of chips in a Monte Carlo Casino!”

If you would like to sponsor the challenge with a donation, you can do so via the JustGiving link here.
