The average GB prime cattle deadweight price saw its first increase for seven weeks, the latest figures report from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has found.

UK prime cattle prices appreciated 0.9p to average 433.4p/kg in the week ending 20th August. According to AHDB, this increase means average prices are now 65p above the five-year average, and 25p above prices this time last year.

During this period, all categories saw a strengthening of prices; overall steers gained 0.6p to average 434.5p/kg, young bulls increased 0.2p to average 425.4p/kg, and overall heifers increased 1.3p to average 434.3p/kg.

Overall cow prices saw a decrease, reducing 1.4p to average 346.7p/kg, with animals at -O4L spec seeing a larger decline of 5.9p to average 366.7p/kg. However, the overall cow price achieved 53.4p above last year’s average for the same week.

AHDB estimates cull cow throughput was estimated at 10,100 head, back 2% on the previous week and year. Data shows that 30,400 prime cattle were processed during the week, up 1% on the week before and up 4% on the estimated number seen in same week last year.
