Research reveals the health benefits of red meat

A research project undertaken by Aberystwyth University student Cate Williams has reinforced the fact that lean red meat can be beneficial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Research shows there are health benefits to eating lean red meat.

An article based on her research and explaining the benefits of including lean red meat in a balanced diet has been published on HCC’s website today. These health benefits include an intake of nutrients which help combat deficiencies and contribute towards maintaining a healthy immune system, development and growth during childhood and pregnancy.

The purpose of the project, which is a partnership between the University and Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), is to consider the ways in which saturated fatty acid content of beef and milk can be reduced in order to decrease the annual death rates from cardiovascular disease.

As part of her research, Cate accompanied HCC staff to the Nursing in Practice Conference held in Cardiff where nurses were asked for their view on what they believe constitutes a healthy diet.

“It is important that the public are aware of the benefits of including red meat in their diet,” said Lynfa Davies, Technical Development Executive at HCC. “We hope that Cate’s research will further our understanding of rumen lipid metabolism and find ways of making red meat even more beneficial for human health.”

Cate Williams was awarded a KESS Scholarship (Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship) to work on a one-year MPhil project entitled ‘Effects of Rumen Bacterial Lipases on Ruminal Lipid Metabolism.’

The project is part-funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through the European Union’s Convergence programme administered by the Welsh Government.
