Back to grass roots with Dawn Meats

Dawn Meats is to work with the levy boards of England and Scotland to help improve grass utilisation on its producers farms.

With grass being one of the cheapest sources of animal feed and in a climate of rising input costs, Dawn will be looking at a way to minimise these within its supply base by focussing on grass for a more sustainable future.

Dawn Meats producers involved with the project will be measuring and monitoring grass growth throughout the 2013 growing season using specialist tools and techniques.

The results from each farm will be monitored and expert advice will be provided to help maximise grass use within each farm. This will enable producers to benefit from increased feed efficient from grass and potentially reduce their reliance on purchased concentrate feeds.

Dawn Meats Group agriculture manager said: “Dawn Meats is delighted to announce this project to highlight the opportunities to maximise the benefits of grass management. We will be working closely with our partner producers and the levy boards to develop this project throughout 2013. We look forward to the results and sharing these across our supply base in due course.”

EBLEX’s northern senior regional manager, Clive Brown said: “We at EBLEX have been focussing on the efficient utilisation of grass for some time and we are very pleased to have the opportunity to work with a major processor such as Dawn Meats to help its producers improve their performance in this area and so reduce their production costs.”
