Dorset butcher celebrates 500 year anniversary

The oldest family business in the country, Butchers RJ Balson and Son, is marking its 500 year anniversary with the publication of a new book “500 Years Behind the Block.”

“I wrote the book as a souvenir to mark our 500 year anniversary, the first time any British family firm has reached this milestone,” master butcher and author Richard Balson said.

Richard Balson is the 26th generation of his family in the butchery craft.

The book tells the story of Balson’s family history in west Dorset and how the business survived plagues, fires, wars, floods and multiple recessions.
