Horsegate conference announced

Dr Barbara Wimmer from Eurofins Medigenomix in Germany, the specialist DNA Analysis Centre which was one of the first independent laboratories to confirm contamination of beef with horse meat in Ireland, will be one of the key speakers at Horsegate – an exhibition and conference being staged by The Society of Food Hygiene and Technology (SOFHT) in October 2013.

Dr Wimmer will focus on the role that DNA based testing methods can have on the fight against food fraud. Following the ‘Horsegate’ issue earlier this year, Eurofins saw a significant increase in testing requirements from across the food industry, resulting in the company investing in new instrumentation and calling in expertise from its other specialist laboratories within the Group to deal with the volume of testing.

Eurofins Medigenomix offers accredited Real Time PCR testing plus sequencing for up to seven species, giving semi quantitative results plus confirmation, while the Group’s Wolverhampton laboratory also offers an alternative cheaper method of qualitative PCR for a range of speciation identification including horse.

Dr Wimmer will also be joined at the conference by speakers from Waitrose, DEFRA and Greggs.
For more information on booking a place at the conference which takes place on 22nd October at the Oxford Belfry contact SOFHT Tel: 01827 875 800, Email: admin@sofht.co.uk. Quote ‘Eurofins’ for a special discounted rate for non-members of £120 plus VAT.
