Karro Food Group has recently landed the contract for the American restaurant chain, Chipotle Mexican Grill, which had stopped serving carnitas in many of its restaurants because its animal welfare auditors found one of its pork suppliers to be violating some of its core animal welfare standards.

Chipotle suspended all purchases from the supplier that meant it was unable to supply about one-third of its restaurants with carnitas. Following an extensive search it finally signed a deal with Karro in the UK.

The Chipotle website, aimed at its consumer customer base, includes a video explaining Karro’s pig movements and why it chose not to select product from the US, where 95% of pigs are raised indoors in what Chipotle describes as a ‘conventional’ system, namely indoors in densely crowded conditions.

A spokesman for Karro was reported as confirming: “Karro is delighted to be working in partnership with such a high quality US business and like Karro, one that takes animal welfare so seriously. Karro will continue to work with Chipotle to continue to develop even higher animal welfare strategies.”
