With warm weather hitting the UK, sales of red meat are on the rise and Kantar Worldpanel has suggested this could be the start of barbecue season.
The latest Meat Fish and Poultry (MFP) results are in, covering the 12 weeks up to 22nd April, and the sales of beef are seeing a rise as 370,000 more shoppers make trips with mince and marinades leading the category.
Nathan Ward, business unit director for MFP, explains: “Shopper numbers remain strong with nine out of ten shoppers buying into the market in the last three months.”
However, he added that the trips are smaller, “as consumers have increasingly wider options available for them”.
Looking at beef sales compared to last Easter, Ward outlined: “We do see a much stronger performance for roasts, but not enough to offset the slower performance at the start of the year.”
Burgers and grills benefitted from 300,000 more shoppers as an early barbeque season takes hold this year. The engine of growth remains processed poultry adding 3.2m more baskets this year. The 12-week level also shows turkey, lamb and pork were in decline. Lamb is the highest drop of -6.3% year on year change.
Continued promotional support has really helped stimulate sales, and with the early May heatwave driving barbecue sales through the roof this definitely seems like the start of barbecue season.
