A new project launched by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) will offer training and advice to red meat abattoirs and cutting plants in Wales.
The support for small and medium sized (SME’s) abattoirs and cutting plants will strengthen their procedures and assist the businesses to develop in their sector. This support will complement and enhance work which was originally undertaken by some SMEs in a similar scheme run by HCC between 2009 and 2012.
“The aim of this project is to help businesses maximise their efficiency, ensure product quality, and provide opportunities for further development,” said John Richards, HCC’s Industry Information Executive.
“It will also give Welsh abattoirs and cutting plants the chance to receive training in food hygiene, health and safety and animal welfare.”
SME abattoirs play an important role in the Welsh red meat food chain. In 2013 these businesses accounted for nearly 20 per cent of lamb, a quarter of beef and all pig throughputs at Welsh abattoirs.
“We therefore see that supporting these companies is vital for the continued success of the red meat sector in Wales,” said Mr Richards. “This enhancement has allowed us to offer the support to considerably more cutting plants and many of these supply butchers, restaurants and other food service outlets.“
The project has received support through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 – 2013, which is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Union.
