Judging for the 2024 UK Sausage Week competition has now concluded, as organisers report an exceptionally high standard and a very substantial volume of entries from all types of meat industry businesses throughout the UK.

Representing the Institute of Meat, Master Butcher Viv Harvey was on this year’s UK Sausage Week judging panel.

Participants will now have to wait until the celebration lunch and awards ceremony on 28th October at Butchers’ Hall in London to find out who will be taking the top spots, including who will be crowned UK Supreme Sausage Champion.

A shortlist of finalists for the eight category awards will be published in early September once the judging papers have been properly evaluated and ranked in order. The UK Supreme Sausage Champion will be chosen from one of these eight category winners.

Publisher of Meat Management magazine, who organise and support UK Sausage Week, Graham Yandell MBE said: “The standard of entries was outstanding this year, and I know the judging panel was wholly impressed by the hundreds of products tasted and evaluated during the week.

“We will have the results finalised soon and I know we shall have some worthy winners. The attention then turns to the key date of 28th October when the awards luncheon at Butchers’ Hall, London will be the backdrop for announcing the 2024 winners. This event will also kick off a special week of sausage celebration!”

Representing the Institute of Meat, master butcher and meat industry consultant Viv Harvey who joined the 2024 judging panel said: “I have tasted and evaluated some exeptional products during the judging process along with colleagues, and I am particularly impressed by the care and attention to detail that manufacturers and smaller retailers have been exhibiting through the creation, packaging and branding of their sausages. Participation has been a lot of fun too.

“A traditional product like the sausage is a well-loved classic, and extremely important to the industry. It is both excellent and reassuring to see such a wide range of entries and engagement ahead of this year’s UK Sausage Week.”

Another judge, industry consultant John Howard added: “I was very impressed by the sheer breadth of entries and it has been a real pleasure to be involved this year. I also know how hard our expert home economists worked to keep the cooked sausages coming. A brilliant job as it is so important to test sausages freshly cooked as well as comparing them with the original raw product.”
