Macsween of Edinburgh has voluntarily decided to recall various products, due to inadequate procedures to control Clostridium botulinum, although the bacterium has not been detected in any product.
Macsween is recalling a number of products, including Delicious Every Day Haggis, In A Hurry Haggis, Haggis, Traditional Haggis, Delicious Every Day Haggis Gluten Free, Haggis Canapes (all sizes), 3 Bird Haggis, In a Hurry Vegetarian Haggis, Delicious Every Day Vegetarian Haggis, Vegetarian Haggis, In a Hurry Black Pudding and Delicious Every Day Black Pudding.
All of the products affected are labelled ‘Up to and including 18/08/2017’.
Clostridium botulinum may cause a serious form of food poisoning, called botulism, and Food Standards Scotland is advising consumers to not eat the products, but instead return them to the store they were bought from for a full refund.
In a statement, the agency acknowledged that Macsween “is acting responsibly” by issuing the voluntary recall and noted it will continue to work with the business and relevant enforcement authorities.
A spokesperson for Macsween commented: “The quality and safety of our products is of paramount importance to us so we have taken the decision to undertake a precautionary and voluntary recall of selected products.
“The products pose no risk to consumer safety if cooked properly, in accordance with the on-pack guidelines.”
