Fresh primary meat and poultry volume sales have risen, the latest Meat, Fish and Poultry (MFP) figures from Kantar Worldpanel for the 12 weeks ending 24th April 2016 have revealed.

Volume sales of chicken increased 5.3% year-on year, turkey sales were up 9.9%, beef sales were up 1.0%, whilst pork volumes sales were up 0.7% compared to the same period last year.

MFP has attributed the volume growth to a period of cheaper groceries, with like-for-like prices having fallen every month since September 2014.

A notable exception to volume growth was in the sales of lamb, which saw a fall of 6.7%.

Nathan Ward, business unit director for MFP, explained: “In meat and poultry the real winners are chicken, turkey and duck, seeing both value and volume growth due to additional shoppers picking up breasts and roasting products.

“In the short term, pork has improved on the challenging trend we’ve seen over the last year, with volume growth stimulated by more temporary price promotions and the strong performance of pork shoulders.”

Overall sales of fresh processed meat and poultry declined 0.8%. Sausage volume sales fell by 3.7%, burgers and grills fell 3.2%, sliced cooked meat fell 1.6% and bacon fell 0.6%. Fresh processed poultry broke this trend producing a 1.5% increase compared to last year’s volume sales.

Ward continued: “The weather is improving and with a heatwave in early May, we might expect the BBQ season to start a little earlier this year. We hope that this will stimulate the sausages, burgers and grills which are still experiencing volume declines.”
