The Worshipful Company of Butchers’ photographer, Phil McCarthy, is currently taking part in a charity walk from London to York in order to help raise funds for the refurbishment of Butchers’ Hall.
Phil is walking solo from Butchers’ Hall in Bartholomew Close, London, to the Company of Butchers of the City of York to deliver a written message from the London Master to the York Master.
The walk aims to raise approximately £7,000 to go towards new dining room furniture for the mezzanine level of the livery hall.
The distance is approximately 220-240 miles and the mission will take Phil around seven days to complete.
The Worshipful Company of Butchers is one of the seven oldest City of London livery companies and is ranked 24th in order of precedence out of the 110 companies. Its livery hall has been closed for the last two years due to building work and will not reopen until 2019 .
Phil said: “A great many changes will have been made to the structure as well as the fabric of the hall and this incurs great expense to the livery. Anything I can do to help will be a drop in the ocean but every bit helps!”
At the time of writing Phil was said to be walking in the rain somewhere near the A1 and was over halfway through his quest to deliver the letter .
The walk is being promoted with the hashtag #Walk2York on Twitter and other social media platforms.
