The Narragansett turkey, a rare breed of premium heritage turkey, which is said to have not been sold in supermarkets for over 70 years, has been made available in Tesco for the Christmas period.

The Narrangansett was bred by crossing old English breeds over 200 years ago. It is said to be particularly distinctive due to the way it is reared. The turkeys live on acres of land and it is claimed they are among the most free range birds in the UK as they can eat, rest and play whenever they choose.

The turkeys are being bred for Tesco by East Anglian farmers and are available for consumers to purchase online and in Tesco stores across the UK.

Suzanne Eldridge, Tesco’s turkey buyer, commented: “With only a few days to before the big day, the Narragansett is the bird to impress guests and to treat the family this Christmas.

“Considered to be the king of British turkeys, the wonderful tasting dark meat and a succulent breast certainly has the flavour to match its reputation.”
