A team of ten liverymen from The Worshipful Company of Butchers (WCB) are preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, in an attempt to raise £100,000.
The proceeds from the climb, set to take place on 8th March 2019, will go towards The Cure Parkinson's Trust and the refurbishment fund for Butchers’ Hall.
David Baker, Tim Stone, Jo Stone, Martin Pointon, Steve Chick, Liz Alexander, Andrew Parker, Lucinda Baker, Charles Baker and Lizzie Baker are the ten members taking part, and aiming to raise the money for a cause close to their hearts.
David Baker spoke to Meat Management about where the idea came from.
He said: “My uncle’s wife, Elizabeth Baker, has Parkinson’s, and I wanted to raise awareness. I decided to get a group together to pitch the idea, and luckily had a great response.
“I’ve never done anything like this before, but I have started training already and the group and I are actually all meeting in Snowdon soon to do a climb.
“March 2019 is when we set sail; I don’t think anything can prepare us for what it will entail, but we are all very excited!”
WCB supports charities and education through the work it does with its investments, fundraising and the hall.
The refurbishment is said to be critical in order to enable the hall to generate more funds to support the charities and educational programmes the livery company is involved in.
