Top German store joins list of Welsh Lamb suppliers

One of Germany’s most prestigious stores has started selling PGI Welsh Lamb to its customers.

Galeria Kaufhoff, an upmarket retailer with over a hundred stores across the country, has been selling Welsh Lamb at its 35 food courts throughout the 2012 autumn period.

It is the latest major store in Germany to stock Welsh Lamb, where exports increased by 164 percent to over £12 million in 2011.

Patricia Czerniak, the German export agent for Welsh red meat promotion body Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC), said: “It is a major coup for Welsh Lamb to be listed by Galeria Kaufhoff, which are the forecourts of the cities.

“Their customers tend to represent the top end consumers who will be looking for quality products such as Welsh Lamb.”

As well as buying Welsh Lamb, customers have also been able to pick up special Welsh Lamb recipe booklets which have been available from the stores meat counters.

Laura Dodds, HCC’s market development manager, said: “Germany is the second largest export market for Welsh Lamb and the addition of Galeria Kaufhoff will help to grow this market further in the future.

“HCC has been running a marketing campaign in Germany which has helped to raise recognition of Welsh Lamb to German consumers.”
