2022 City Meat Lecture keynote speaker confirmed

This year’s Worshipful Company of Butchers (WCB) annual City Meat Lecture will be presented by professor Alice Stanton. The professor will be leading the discussion on: ‘How much red meat should we eat? / Will the WWF climate ambitions endanger human health?’ The event takes place on Thursday 24th November at Butchers Hall London, starting at 6.30pm.

Butchers Hall, London, home to the City Meat Lecture on 24th November 2022.

Professor Stanton is a clinician-scientist, and a professor of cardiovascular pharmacology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She is also a director of human health at Devenish Nutrition.

Author of over 140 peer-reviewed published papers, professor Stanton has delivered many lectures concerning evidenced-based healthy diets from sustainable food systems, including the science lecture at the January 2020 Oxford Farming Conference.

WCB point out that the subject is highly topical, given the challenges facing the industry around diet and the environment, and it should create great interest for delegates.

Following the lecture, Jayne Buxton, author of The Great Plant-Based Con, John Powell, head of agriculture sectors team at Defra, and liveryman Judith Batchelar OBE, director of Food Matters International, will  discuss the issues raised as part of a Q&A panel, facilitated by the lecture’s chairman, liveryman Stuart Roberts.

Jayne Buxton is an ambassador for The Real Food Campaign and The Public Health Collaboration. She has written for national publications including The Guardian and The Independent.

John Powell has worked as an advisor to over 20 EU candidate countries on the establishment of EU agricultural policies and institutions, and has also worked on future farming policy and environmental land management schemes.

Judith Batchelar OBE is a biochemist and nutritionist. Former director at Sainsbury’s plc, she has worked in the food sector for over 35 years and was awarded her OBE in 2015 for services to food and farming.

Stuart Roberts is a former vice and deputy president of the National Farmers Union. He currently farms 120 hectares in Hertfordshire and is also assisting the Liberal Democrats to develop its portfolio of food, farming and environmental policies.
