ABP to launch Farmers of the Future competition at 2015 Balmoral Show

ABP, in conjunction with Blade Farming Northern Ireland, has announced the launch of its Farmers of the Future programme at this year’s Balmoral Show.

Farmers of the Future aims to promote farming as a long term career option by encouraging and educating young people with regard to the best rearing practices. The initiative is open to aspiring farmers aged between 12 and 16.

To win, candidates need to submit a 200 word proposal explaining why they should win.

Winners will be presented with six calves aged 14 weeks to rear through to finish. They will also receive professional support and knowledge from ABP and industry experts. The value to each winner will be in the region of £6,000.

A short list will be drawn and the winners will be announced in June. The closing date for entries is the 5th June.

Arthur Callaghan of Blade Farming Northern Ireland commented: “We’re always keen to inspire the next generation of farmers into the industry and that is exactly what we are doing with this programme. The winners will receive the perfect stepping stone into a career in farming, being able to rear their own cattle along with the very best professional support.”

The Balmoral Show, now in its 147th year, is Ireland’s largest agricultural show. Held in Balmoral Park, Lisburn, the Show hosts various exhibitions over three days.
