AHDB meat buying app gets upgrade

The Meat Purchasing Guide (MPG) app has been updated to include more for its near 30,000 users.

AHDB programme development manager and master butcher, Dick Van Leeuwen.

The free-of-charge app was launched by AHDB in 2013 and is specifically designed to make meat ordering quick and easy, while also providing new product ideas.

Originally featuring 450 beef, lamb, mutton, pork and veal cuts, the new upgrade means users now have an additional 300 cuts to choose from.

Developed for chefs, meat suppliers, buyers, product developers, exporters and importers, the app allows users to select their desired cuts and email the list direct to their suppliers.

With simple images and brief descriptions, the  app also links to cutting specifications on the AHDB website. This allows suppliers to provide customers with exactly what they want.

With over 45 years’ experience, programme lead Dick van Leeuwen explains why the MPG and its app are so important: “Meat cuts can be somewhat confusing, especially with new cuts being developed, the interchangeability of traditional and modern names, and the challenges language barriers can bring.

“The guide allows us to bring some clarity and more importantly consistency to our industry, not to mention wider understanding and skills development. Plus, bringing technology advances such as the app helps our industry to modernise, making us more resilient.”

The app is part of a wider range of resources such as cost calculators, nutritional guides, menu inspiration and more, available on the AHDB website to all those who work with meat.

Such resources have seen a surge in popularity during the COVID-19 restrictions, in particular the Meat Education Programme. In April, AHDB issued over 9000 new certificates to individuals making the most of the free course.

The app if free of charge and available to downlowd from App Store on Apple devices or Google Play Store on Android devices.
